A chickens day out

Hello! :)

In true chicken fashion, they are growing like weeds, and are finally old enough to spend some time outside of the brooder and romp around outside now that the weather is beautiful. Here are some pictures of their first excursions with the great outdoors!

flying out of the transport box. they LOOOVE stretching their wings outside and flying around! So pretty.

Nugget, our Rhode Island Red, fluffing up her feathers :)

Can I help you? They found a patch of sand and had a ball pecking and digging

I LOVE FLUFFY CHICKEN BUTTS! lol

Their personalities are really starting to develop. Nugget here is the bravest, the most curious, and the greediest. lol. And being our only resident Rhode Island Red, she has the biggest comb. She's also the biggest ham for the camera ;) The white one's are the biggest "chickens" if you will, they are the jumpiest, but they are slowly coming around.

Lots of sunbathing was had !

We are really enjoying this time to bond with the chickens. Lizard had quite the following, and a lap full of chickens for the afternoon!

We brought thelanore out to stretch and munch on grass while we were out with the chickens.

If you made it this far, we'll let you in on a little surprise. Real little. Meet our newest bunny, coming home next month! I finally found the broken blue baby I've been looking for! It's going to be a great addition to our mini lop breeding program :)

SO CUTE!!

Let the planting begin!

It's wabbit season!.....It's duck season!......Noooo, it's PLANTING season!! YAY!!!!! Well ok, its only indoor planting season, but it's a start!! Outdoor planting season is just around the corner!

Today Lizard and I planted our Bell Peppers, Jalapeno Peppers, Tomatoes, and Broccoli seeds

Our Seeds are here!

This years seeds have arrived! This year I went with heirloom seeds that are guaranteed to reseed so that we can use them again next year! I had to place another order though, as I forgot my carrots and banana peppers, and am also getting  dill, peppermint, and parsley! I'm also going to hunt down some local strawberry plants. The peppers, tomatoes, and broccoli will be started indoors this weekend, and the rest will wait until sometime next month to be planted in the ground, after our compost gets delivered, and the ground warms up. Sigh! The good news is this is the last year we will have to buy compost thanks to our bunnies and chickens! :)

Step Two: the garden outline

For our next step in our garden creation, my hubby and I took what blueprints I had so far, and with some landscaping spray, we outlined our gravel paths and major garden elements. This part was VERY exciting, to see where everything was going to be, and made visualizing so much easier. :)

a sneek peek at the layout......

ooh a crop circle, wonder what this will be? :) kudos to my hubby for drawing an amazingly round circle free hand!

this will be one of my favorite projects. what could it be?? :)

Bigger chickens mean bigger challenges

The chickens are even bigger yet!

almost fully feathered, it was apparent that they had outgrown their brood box. So we made a bigger one.

We got creative and made a roost for them :)

They liked the roost, but then this started to happen......

Oh dear. So we took the roost back out, and then THIS happened.......

Oh dear!  They apparently don't need the roosts help at all in getting out! Here's Crispy, Penny, and Sheldon meeting Bentley the bunny for the first time. This got Bentley all excited and then HE jumped out of his cage. So it was then a morning of chasing chickens AND bunnies. Oh boy. better finish the coop QUICK!

Step One: Veggie garden and Clean up begins

Step One: Our veggie garden begins! My hubby did an awesome job doing all the tilling. He made it much bigger than I had expected!

Day one also meant starting the clean up for the gardens area. These next pics are kind of embarrassing, beacause this lot had not been used for many years for anything but a place to put all the old house materials that we tore out while we did construction. Our home is over 80 years old, so we are definitly doing lots of renovating. If you can make it to the end, I PROMISE it gets better!

Ok so here's the down and dirty. Day one we chopped up dead trees, cleaned up construction material leftovers, old wood, TONS of tumble weeds and lots of trash that has blown into our lot

Our boxer, being absolutely no help

Redoing the fences is definitely top priority!

Our unenthusiastic teenager, lol

Lizard working hard. Unfortunately she has her mommas wheelbarrow skills and it ended up dumping. yea I am not coordinated enough to operate a wheelbarrow. lol

 END OF DAY ONE:

WoW! you can actually see the ground! There's even GREEN! Who knew!

Yea we kicked butt in one day!!

DAY TWO:

Day two was raking, raking, raking! Raking up all the left over weeds, leaves, and sticks

Our awesome neighbor dropped in and helped! Hi Thomas!

END OF DAY TWO:

BARE GROUND!

SOOO much better! I told ya! Now the fun begins!

Believe it or not here was DAY THREE:

Thats West Texas for you! Lovely one day, snow the next! To be continued!......
